Project Description

Topic: sky = the society
Theme: 1:self vs society   2: life and death vs between life and death  3:promised land vs reality

Project: vocational school / sky observatory
Purpose: children will find out the way they coexist with the society.
# of student:  10 children (6 – 16) (any gender) who have experienced sex slavery.
Each month, new student arrives.
Term: 1 year
Workers: 1 engineer, 1 cook, 1 scientist, 1 policeman, 1 former sex slave, 1 English teacher, 1 sculptor, 1 computer engineer, 1 medical doctor, 1 administrator
They are also all teachers and live with all students.
Curriculum: This school takes Montessori’s method, so there is no scheduled class or lecture.  They learn with the natural environmnt and real materials.  There is no specific curriculum and class room. They learn what they are interested in.  Students spend time to study something about sky and vocational skills.  They may spend some amount of time to observe the sky.  They may write, draw, sing about what they see.
Life: They sleep in semi-private bedrooms. (like tents in a camping ground) with all the students and adults.  They wake up 7 am and cook breakfast and clean the facility.  After they take bath, they study by noon.  They cook lunch and eat.  They go back to study (they can study wherever they like).  At 7 pm, they cook dinner and take bath.  During the free time, they may watch news and read books.  They find a place to sleep in the room, and go to bed by 9 pm.  Each month when a new student arrives and a student leaves, there is a welcome and farewell ceremony.  This helps the new student to encourage the new life in the facility.
Visitors:  There are some guests once in a while.  Most of them are former students, and they usually stay a night there.
Rights:   The children are encouraged to do whatever they want to do.  However, they are not allowed to leave school without permission.  They are free to quit this program.
Tuition:  They have to pay the tuition after they get out of the school and get a job.
Antagonist:  Children are being forced to fit in this society after they were freed from the sex slavery. This school is the transition to the new real world the children are experiencing.  Antagonist of the vocational school is the sky observatory.  The objective of this vocational school is making money, which is the way to live in this society.    In compare to the vocational school, the sky observatory offers the children to another interpretation of this society.  The sky in the Carrizo Plain shows the way to see this society.
